EBooks verses Paperbacks

20131016-132701.jpg

Ereader verses Paperback!!!

I am going to just jump in here and say, I LOVE my paperbacks. I am team paperback about 75% of the time. The way they feel, smell, the organic nature of holding a book in my hands while I dive into an unknown world; it’s heaven. I find it also an experience to go through them.

In this world of electronics, ereaders are all the rage; for Christmas last year my hubby and boys got me a NookHD which is AWESOME. I can set different profiles for my 4 year old, my 13 year old and myself. I can decide what content they each have access too including books, games, internet; so as a mom, it gives me that added level of security, it even recommends games for my munchkin, so an added bonus.

However, I do think I will have to invest in a Kindle, only because I get so many novels for it; I have to app on my iPhone, so you might think its rhetorical to have another device to toss in my purse, but trust me, when you realize how much memory eBooks take up on your phone, you will want an ereader or a paperback. I think my Kindle has over 4,000 novels and novellas, between what is on iCloud and actually on my phone.

As an avid reader of the written word, I don’t care what form it comes to me, as long as it comes to Momma!! Tossing a paperback into my purse as I head out the door for a trip with hubby is always fun, he prefers to chat when he isn’t answering calls for work, so putting my nose in a book is a great escape; now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my hubby, I just have several book boyfriends, yes, in the same series (more on that in another post). It’s difficult to read my phone or Nook while in car since I must wear Polarized sunglasses; they cut the glare (and help to prevent migraines), so they cut the words from the ereader, so I either A) have to take my sunglasses off, B) talk to hubby, C), try to sleep, or D) read a paperback. Usually, I go for C or D, lol.

Simple Comparison ~

Ereader – Electronic, have to keep it charged, can hold thousands of books and games, easy to get books, can email from, thin, can highlight passages, easy to jump or search

Paperback/Hardcover – no charge necessary, one story at a time, can read in the bath, its easy to share (just hand it over), don’t have to worry about glare, you need to have bookmarks, don’t have to worry about it shorting out in the water

Plenty of authors are getting their start with eBooks; I have many Indie Author friends who I luv and adore, and their works are ONLY available via ereader format; does that mean I will stop reading them? Not on your life! I have made some wonderful friends and I would not trade reading their books on my iPhone or Nook for ANYTHING.

Mainstream authors, sorry, give me my PAPERBACK! Do not forget us paperback fans! Don’t short change us and publish something ONLY for an ereader, be fair. We are fans too, we just want to have the nice set of you books on our shelf for others to see and to share with our girl friends and to grab when we need some bath time reading material (a few have gotten baptized, yet they are still alive and have forgiven me). Paperbacks are NOT dead.

Bookstores are still around, so there is a large market for physical books; I could spend hours and hours in a used book store (I have a few times) or Barnes and Noble. I find it a community experience while searching the shelves looking for something new or someone new or an old favorite. When I see someone searching in a used book store around where a favorite author is, I usually make small talk, that’s how I discovered a few authors who I am now a big fan of; other authors I have discovered just by walking down the isle at Target and the cover caught my eye, buy the book and I’m hooked, then my search was on for the other books in that series. That would not have happened if I had seen an eBook.

I find myself stretched thin some times with eBooks. I will be reading 5 or 6 books simultaneously, yet with paperbacks, one or possibly 2 if I am very adventurous at a time. That keeps my attention and plots from wandering too much, plenty of times I have been reading one eBook and then switch to another and another, since I get a new one that looks great and I end up forgetting about the other one for weeks; then it takes a while to get back into the groove of that one again; whereas with my paperback, I can see my progress and its sitting on my nightstand or in my purse and it BEGS me to ‘come read me.. just a few pages.. you know you want too” Does anyone else’s paperback(s) do that or is it just mine? Perhaps it’s the lack of sleep some nights that makes my book talk to me or being over caffeinated.

Well, the great debate of Ereaders verses paperbacks will continue on without a definite winner; just think about this, if the power went out or all electricity was gone, forever, paperbacks would still be able to be read.

I don’t care what you read or how you read; just READ!! Books are MY way to relax after being ‘mommy’ all day. They are my retreat and way to unwind after school stuff, bills, NRA classes (bet ya didn’t expect that!!), family drama and life. For me, books and sanity are one in the same.

What are you curing up with today??

WAKING SARAH – COMING NOVEMBER 3rd – KRYSTAL SHANNAN

~Short Excerpt~

PROLOGUE

Sarah’s mind drifted as her friend Margaret recited her vows and became Scott O’Hearn’s wife. She stood silently holding the bridal bouquet. They were calla lilies. She would have been carrying calla lilies two weeks from today. They were her favorite and Brad always got some for her on her birthday.
Her thoughts moved to the unworn wedding dress hanging in the back of her mother’s closet. When she glanced up at Scott, the look of adoration he had for Margaret nearly broke her heart all over again. Brad would have looked at her like that.
Margaret had practically begged her to stand as her maid of honor. Sarah wanted to be here for her friend’s wedding. She really did. But neither Margaret nor Sam knew she’d been engaged to Brad. None of them knew she and Brad had picked out a wedding date. Or that it was two weeks from today. September twenty-second. They hadn’t had the time to tell anyone…
She shook her head and sniffed quietly, clearing the image from her mind.
Now, he was dead. That future they’d both been so excited to share with their friends had been stolen.
Nearly six months had passed since she’d gotten a life-altering knock on the door from two Houston police detectives. Sorry to inform you, but life-as-you-know-it has just ended. That’s not what they’d said, but it might as well have been.
She’d dropped out of college and come home to Vegas to find one Sam already married and Margaret in a rapidly-becoming-serious relationship and now married as of today. Margaret had told her earlier that day she’d wanted to get married in May, but somehow her big bear of a fiancé convinced her September would be better weather. Of course, Margaret had also shared they’d had a few snafus getting the inn up and running again, too. It was an older building. So the extra time had been needed to accommodate the repairs needed to house everyone.
Sure.
She’d listened to Margaret ramble on, but most of it had fallen on deaf ears.
The happiness in the room was suffocating. She should be happy for her friends, but she wasn’t. Then she felt guilty. Their lives weren’t perfect. Both Sam and Margaret had both recently lost their fathers. She couldn’t imagine losing her Dad, but right now the only thing her mind kept circling back to was that they both had their soul mates.
Hers was gone.
The forests outside the inn called to her soul. Dark thoughts of disappearing into the forest forever crossed through her mind. It was a big mountain. Her dreams over the last few days here had tortured her sleep and she’d doubled up on her prescription just to make it through the night. The pills helped silence the voice, but no treatment or therapy had ever successfully gotten rid of it.
She was so tired of the pain.

So thank you ladies for having the Patience, Faith in me to pull this off and for the fun!! It has been wonderful getting to know each and every one of you, many who are new to me. I was hoping for a dozen authors, and I ended up with 18, so my expectations were blown out of the water.

Romance Author ~ Jennifer Gavran

1. If you could trade places with any of your leading ladies, who would it be and why??
💗Rachel, sure. She already embodies a lot of me, close friends will see many of my little “quirks” in her. If you have ever seen a picture of me, and read my novella, “Trust Me”, you would see many similarities.

2. In 5 words, please describe your ‘Romance Writing Style’.
💗Complex, Fun, Edgy, Naughty, passionate

3. Are any of your more ‘passionate’ scenes, based on any real life experiences?
💗Yep; since this is my first real effort into writing anything, a lot is drawn from real life.

4. What is your ‘girl vice’? ie getting your hair done? Nails? Shopping? Gossiping? Chick flicks?
💗 Bubble baths & doing my nails.

5. Are any of your leading ladies, based on your you or any of the ladies in your life? If so, who?
💗Rachel is a lot of me, so is another character I’m in the process of working on. Rachel is more me over the last 10 or 15 years and the other character is me from a past life, so very different sides of me.

6. When writing your more ‘adult’ scenes, do you picture what’s happening in your head, then write what you see? Or do you use another technique?
💗Yep; it’s like watching a movie, I write what I see, then fill in the smells and sounds for the reader.

7. This or That ~ Wine or Beer? Sex in the City or Caroline in the City? Perfume or Jewelry? Painted nails or Au Natural? Tall or Dark or Handsome?
💗Wine, Moscato or Pink Moscato. Caroline in the City. Jewelry. Painted. All 3!

8. Do your leading men come from any place in particular? Dreams? Movie stars? Your partner? Past partners?
💗Everywhere! All of the above! My fantasies, handsome actors, my husband, past lovers, random pictures.

9. What is the first romance novel you ever read? How old were you?
💗”True Blue Knight” by Roseanne Williams, harlequin temptation, I still have it! I was 16. It’s been dropped in the bath, had breast milk on it, it’s not in great (or even good) shape, but it’s my go to and I love it!!! Please don’t report me to the Book Police!!

10. Do you write for a particular audience or for yourself and pray others like it as well?
💗I write for me and refine for others lol.

11. What was the LAST (most recent) romance novel you read? Did you enjoy it?
💗”The Vampire with the Dragon Tattoo” by Kerrelyn Sparks, it’s book 14, in her Love At the Stake series; I am currently reading “One Lucky Vampire” by Lynsay Sands (paperback). My ereaders have Indie Authors I’m Beta reading.

12. As a writer of romance, do you ever put yourself in your leading lady’s shoes and ‘walk’ around in them before you write?
💗I’ve walked in their shoes a lot. It helps me to get a feel for what is going on and to better describe that to a reader so they are there as well.

13. Would You Rather ~
Live 1 wk in your leading lady’s shoes
Or
The leading lady from another author? Who & Why?
💗I have already… But I would love to walk in Leigh from the Argeneau books by Lynsay Sands; she puts up with Lucian and he’s one bad a$$ or Faith Malone from Maya Banks novel “Sweet Surrender”. Both ladies are strong and they own who they are and don’t make any excuses for it; they also have very strong male counterparts that are Alpha male and they balance them out.

14. Do you have any advice to give the leading lady of the novel you are currently working on or just finished?
💗I PROMISE things get better in the next one!! You are stronger than you realize & have a lot of support! Hang in there Rachel.

15. How hard do you try to keep your ‘love’ scenes realistic and flow with the plot? Does it come easy for you?
💗If it doesn’t feel ‘natural’ then I don’t add it in. It has to flow with the story and feel like it belongs there, not like it was put there for the sake of being there.

16. In 5 years, where would you like to be in your career as a romance author? 10 years?
💗I would love to have a few novels under my belt and be doing it full time. In 10 years, I want to have a book on the Best Seller list and have my kids almost out of the house, hehehe.

17. When it comes to mainstream Romance authors, who do you enjoy curling up with to read?
💗 Maya Bands, Kerrelyn Sparks, Lynsay Sands, Shiloh Walker (new to her). Mostly I read Indie Authors.

18. If your sweetheart wanted to sweep you off your feet, what would they need to do??
💗Take the boys for a few hours and let me relax lol or Take me to Ruth’s Chris after a day at the range

19. In the spectrum of ‘Romance’, where would you place your most recent novel? Closer to the ‘Sweet’ side or ‘Naughty/Erotica’ side or somewhere in the middle??
💗More erotica with my current work and more in the middle with another one I have in the works

20. Do you ever daydream about people you see at the park? Airport? Train station? Mall? And build romance scenes around them while you daydream?
💗All the time. It’s a great way to think of characters and to come up with scenes.

21. This or That ~ Romantic Dinner at Home or Romantic Dinner Out? Roses or Lilies? Diamonds or Emeralds? Demure or Sex Kitten? Making love on a secluded Beach or Making love in a secluded cabin in the woods?
💗Dinner out. Emeralds (my beta readers will understand that one soon). Demure. Cabin in the woods (again, my beta victims will be there soon)

Romance Author ~ Isla Bennet

1. If you could trade places with any of your leading ladies, who would it be and why?? Definitely I would trade places with Valerie Jordan, the heroine in TEXAS REDEEMED. She can ride the hell out of a horse, gives as good as she gets and is strong enough to overcome a lot of challenges to get the man she’s loved all her life.

2. In 5 words, please describe your ‘Romance Writing Style’. To be truly honest, I go into low-maintenance hot-mess mode when I’m writing. Not too long ago I tweeted that a hot guy I haven’t really gotten to know yet (I call him Stranger Man) found it sexy that I write romance. Sitting on the floor, typing, wearing a Barbie T-shirt and eating Pringles, is sexy? I’ll take it.

3. Are any of your more ‘passionate’ scenes, based on any real life experiences? Let’s just say I’m very educated. But where the hell would I be without an overactive imagination?

4. What is your ‘girl vice’? ie getting your hair done? Nails? Shopping? Gossiping? Chick flicks? Watching Hallmark movies. Really, there are some sweet feel-good gems out there.

5. Are any of your leading ladies, based on your you or any of the ladies in your life? If so, who? Valerie, the heroine of my debut contemporary romance, is many of the things I’m not. I’m almost intimidated by her, which is fascinating for me as a writer. I don’t know anyone like her, who’s been through what she’s been through. She’s someone I do admire.

6. When writing your more ‘adult’ scenes, do you picture what’s happening in your head, then write what you see? Of do you use another technique? I actually “see” it as I write it. I need to really be in the characters’ minds and have a solid idea of how sex affects them physically and emotionally. Nope, I wouldn’t call it a threesome.

7. This or That ~ Wine or Beer? Sex in the City or Caroline in the City? Perfume or Jewelry? Painted nails or Au Natural? Tall or Dark or Handsome? Beer! Sex in the City. Perfume. Painted nails. Handsome—definitely handsome, because it comes in a great variety of forms.

8. Do your leading men come from any place in particular? Dreams? Movie stars? Your partner? Past partners? Aside from looks, my leading men are totally fictional, which is a bummer because I’d really—no, seriously, REALLY—love to meet Doctor Peyton Turner, the hero from TEXAS REDEEMED. He’s got quite possibly everything I would want in a man. Alas, we wouldn’t make a good match because he’s meant for Valerie Jordan. 😉

9. What is the first romance novel you ever read? How old were you? There’s a historical romance I picked up on the school bus when I was in junior high. Pretty raunchy—much more interesting than algebra. And, of course, the same year I read Judy Blume’s FOREVER.

10. Do you write for a particular audience or for yourself and pray others like it as well? I walk a fine line between writing for myself and keeping in mind my audience. It’s not very simple to do.

11. What was the LAST (most recent) romance novel you read? Did you enjoy it? THE DERBY GIRL by Tamara Morgan. Hell to the yes, I enjoyed it! The heroine is kickass.

12. As a write of romance, do you ever put yourself in your leading lady’s shoes and ‘walk’ around in them before you write? Funny you should ask. I’m working on something now that offers up a heroine based on all of my “personality shortcomings.” She makes mistakes, doesn’t quite have it together, and I’m writing her as if I was in her shoes. Which is already rather challenging because in the first scene she’s rocking stilettos, and I am more of an UGG Boots kind of girl. LOL.

13. Would You Rather ~
Live 1 wk in your leading lady’s shoes
Or
The leading lady from another author? Who & Why? I would love to be Josephine March from LITTLE WOMEN. I would certainly not refuse Laurie.

14. Do you have any advice to give the leading lady of the novel you are currently working on or just finished? To Valerie – you can breathe now. This man and this child are your happy ending.

15. How hard do you try to keep your ‘love’ scenes realistic and flow with the plot? Does it come easy for you? I’m a stickler for seeing to it that the sex makes sense in my books. Whether it’s a slow-burn romance or a hot, heavy-on-lust story, the sex must make logical sense and change things in a big way.

16. in 5 years, where would you like to be in your career as a romance author? 10 years? I’d love to win a RITA, whether within 5 years or 10 years. I want to write a book that reaches out and changes readers in some meaningful way. A reader commented that my debut reminded her of ATONEMENT, and it made me smile because ATONEMENT tortured me—it was so beautiful and tragic and heartbreaking. There’s quite a bit of beauty, tragedy and heartbreak in TEXAS REDEEMED, but I’ve been told that the one person who’d never, ever satisfy me is myself. Despite even that, such a comment made me think, and I doubt I’ll ever forget it.

17. When it comes to mainstream Romance authors, who do you enjoy curling up with to read? Nora Roberts. The woman’s an expert storyteller.

18. If your sweetheart wanted to sweep you off your feet, what would they need to do?? Look at me in my Barbie T-shirt and the shorts I stole from my brother, and call me sexy in a tone of voice that makes it clear that in no uncertain terms, he will spend the next several hours proving that he means what he says. Or, of course, just grab me and pick me up, such as a certain impossibly hot bartender did during a male revue… Okay, I’m not getting into that. Next question, please!

19. In the spectrum of ‘Romance’, where would you place your most recent novel? Closer to the ‘Sweet’ side or ‘Naughty/Erotica’ side or somewhere in the middle?? Straddlin’ the middle. It’s a slow-burn romance, and the hero and heroine have a hell of a lot of big issues in their way. When they do have sex, though, they don’t hold back. If you knew what they’d been through, you’d understand why.

20. Do you ever daydream about people you see at the park? Airport? Train station? Mall? And build romance scenes around them while you daydream? Nope, I never have. I envy authors who can do this.

21. This or That ~ Romantic Dinner at Home or Romantic Dinner Out? Roses or Lilies? Diamonds or Emeralds? Demure or Sex Kitten? Making love on a secluded Beach or Making love in a secluded cabin in the woods? Romantic dinner out. Roses. Diamonds. Sex Kitten (okay, more like Hellcat, but hey.) Making love in a cabin in the woods. I’m gonna need that one to happen. Soon.
